Need that extra something to complement your yin yang coffee table and that uncomfortable IKEA armchair? Well perhaps that something is an Andy Warhol artwork. Oh, can’t afford Warhol on an IKEA budget? Luckily, there are plenty of places where you can find high quality prints of your favorite works.

Nothing will tie a room together quite like a tasteful art print, but yet many people only display their own awkward family photos. When choosing an artwork, you must decide if you are picking the art to match the room, or going to make the room jive with the art. Unless you’re an aficionado, then the former is most likely the way to go.

Purchase something you like, but make sure that it doesn’t clash with colored items in your room. The best idea is to pick some artwork with two or three dominant colors that highlight the main colors in your room. They don’t need to match, just make sure that you’re not picking opposites on the color wheel. You might need to hang the artwork in several places before finding its home. Different lighting will make the artwork look different (think art gallery – white walls with lots of lights). Consider the size of the artwork as well as the size of the room. A small painting will seem out of proportion and one that’s too large will be overwhelming. Hang the art piece so that the center is at eye height. Also, make sure you keep with the feel of your room. Will a Monet really impress the ladies in your bachelor pad? Well then how about a huge Andre the Giant OBEY print? Now that’s more like it! Also remember that a black and white piece of art is also a good way to show your taste while keeping things subdued.
